Dr. Peter Jones, Ph.D. Contributes to Prostate Cancer Study

Dr. Peter J Jones Manitoba, has lent his expertise to an intensive study created to ascertain the treatment ramifications of white button mushroom extract. More than a million people are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year, and the second-most common cancer found in men worldwide is prone to form tumors and spread.

The interventional, multi-center, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, and crossover study is evaluating the effectiveness of a natural alternative or aid to chemotherapy and immunotherapy in the treatment of prostate cancer. The research team includes Dr. Michael Traub from Lokahi Health Center, Dr. Semone Myrie from Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals, and Dr. Dugald Seely from the Ontario Cancer Centre.

“Our hope has always been to gain insight into whether Agaricus Bisporus Extract (ABE) is a viable option to aid in the treatment of prostate cancer,” said Dr. Peter Jones Ph.D. “Comparing the results of the tests to a placebo allows us to look for changes in metabolic parameters, cytokines, hormones, and myeloid-derived suppressor cells.”

The group is measuring changes in serum Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) over a 12-week treatment period to determine the percentage of patients with at least a 50% reduction in PSA. The safety of using ABE is being evaluated over 14, 28, and 56 days to determine if there ae any adverse events and document their severity. Continued study and exploration of viable, safe treatments for prostate cancer are natural next steps in the research process.
