When choosing disposable gloves for dental offices and laboratories, there are many bright colors, textures, and even fragrances to choose from. But more important are the material used, the fit and the quality.

Are disposable latex, nitrile, or vinyl gloves better suited for dentists? Dentists and practice staff usually have individual preferences for a particular material but are not fully aware of the advantages and disadvantages of the many different qualities.

DISPOSABLE GLOVES IN THE DENTAL PRACTICE: LATEX OR NITRILE?

The front-runners, in terms of comfort and tactile feel, are gloves made of latex. They are made primarily of natural rubber and are exceptionally soft. Alternatives such as nitrile gloves now come close, but latex is still a fingertip ahead of the pure plastic nitrile in terms of stretchability.

Both materials have one thing in common: the cheaper the gloves, the faster they become permeable. Because of the long periods of wear at the dental chair, dental practices should pay particular attention to good-quality gloves. A general practitioner, whose examinations often last less than a minute, can work safely even with inexpensive gloves. For dentistry, other requirements apply.

Latex gloves: comfortable to wear, but a problem for allergy sufferers

Latex gloves are available in various designs, for example, with coatings of aloe vera or with differently textured surfaces for more grip and wearing comfort. In addition, manufacturers work with different material mixtures that influence the wearing feel. Less expensive latex gloves usually contain a lower proportion of natural latex – at the expense of stretchability and protective effect.

However, latex has one minor drawback that can become a significant problem for some wearers: Tiny latex proteins can lead to allergic reactions. The allergy problem is made even more severe by the fine powder made from corn starch used during production to loosen the freshly dipped gloves from the dipping wearer.

The latex proteins combine with the powder and are thus dispersed in the air we breathe. Unnoticeable for most – unfortunately a severe problem for allergy sufferers.

In the past, latex gloves were even powdered to make them easier to put on. Today, extra-powdered examination gloves may no longer be used in the healthcare industry. In addition, the powder particles from production and the dissolved proteins must be washed out in one or more chlorine baths – so-called chlorination. But tiny particles can remain behind as a general rule—the stronger the chlorination, the lower the proportion of dissolved latex proteins. At the same time, however, the gloves become smoother and more slippery.

Polymer coatings also minimize the risk of allergies. Chlorinated gloves with an external polymer coating are therefore a good alternative. The coating makes the gloves extremely non-slip, making them ideal for use at the dental chair.

Nitrile gloves: Suitable for allergy sufferers, available in many colors – and now surprisingly comfortable

Nitrile is plastic and, therefore, latex-free. Examination gloves made of nitrile are the first choice for dentists and practice staff allergic to natural rubber latex or fear sensitization.

While nitrile gloves used to be relatively stiff, improved production technologies are now making the material thinner, more elastic, and thus more comfortable to wear. With the wearing comfort, the popularity of examination gloves made of nitrile has increased significantly in recent years. Depending on the area of application, there is a choice of different thicknesses and degrees of softness.

Many users do not know: Gloves made of nitrile can also potentially contain allergens, such as anti-aging agents, vulcanization accelerators, and plasticizers. These substances – although much less frequently than latex – can trigger sensitization and cause allergic contact dermatitis. If there is a reasonable suspicion of a corresponding allergy, an alternative should be sought, such as powder-free nitrile gloves without accelerators.

Are you looking for nitrile gloves for the dental office? The best product is Yanipure from Yanimed. The Yanipure disposable nitrile glove is the first choice for the dental practice that values the highest quality workmanship, excellent tactile sensitivity, and excellent grip. The fine texture of the fingertips combined with a new formula for more elasticity makes the Yanipure Nitrile disposable glove the first choice for the quality-conscious dentist.

VINYL EXAMINATION GLOVES

Disposable gloves made of vinyl are of excellent value. The material is soft and exceptionally smooth on the outside, so it is used a lot, especially in nursing. Vinyl gloves are also convincing in terms of skin-friendliness.

Nevertheless, disposable vinyl gloves are rarely used as examination gloves in dentistry, as they generally perform worse than latex or nitrile models in terms of stretchability, tear-resistance, and safety.

However, high-quality vinyl gloves are suitable as examination gloves for use in dental practices.

STERILELY PACKAGED AND ERGONOMIC: MEDICAL-SURGICAL GLOVES

Medical disposable gloves, also known as surgical gloves or surgical gloves, are the top class among disposable gloves. They are of particularly high quality, individually sterile-packaged, and are used during surgical procedures. In addition to latex and polymer-coated latex, polychloroprene (neoprene) is also used for high-quality surgical gloves.

Due to the higher risk of infection and the long-wearing times, surgical gloves have an even higher tightness than examination gloves. However, it is still important to regularly change surgical gloves, especially for longer procedures, to prevent permeability due to the long-wearing time. After all, hygiene is the be-all and end-all in the dental practice.

PRACTICAL TEST: COMPARE THE WEARING COMFORT OF DISPOSABLE GLOVES

Due to the long-wearing times of disposable gloves in dentistry, practices should pay attention to quality and a good fit.

Whether nitrile or latex, stronger or softer, textured or perfumed, individual dentists must decide which glove offers the best tactile and wearing experience. Differences in the fit also result from the mold used in the manufacture of disposable gloves. Therefore, it is advisable to test different materials and sizes and try out models from different manufacturers made of the same material.

Tip: Let your practice team help decide which gloves and sizes will be used in your practice and order different models and sizes for testing. The cost of an additional type of disposable gloves is very manageable, but the daily gain in comfort for each employee is high.
