The Warrior’s Bane by David L. McDaniel is an epic fantasy novel where Alaezdar is a warrior in the fantasy realm of Wrae-Kronn where he attempts to escape the malicious exploits of a mercenary guild by finding peace in a quiet farming village. As the mercenaries from the guild seek his head, he soon finds himself trapped in between his past and new even more dangerous foes. When these foes attack their village he is forced to lead a band of inexperienced villagers into a perilous forest of wicked and blood-lusting creatures that have kidnaped a female villager dragging her into the forest for a sacrifice to win the favor of their god in an upcoming tribal war.
This book sets up the series where he will soon learn about his involvement in a prophecy of the War for the Quarterstar Shards where one faction of power pits him against the other in order to manipulate his role in the prophecy to gain power to their advantage. Even though each faction wants him to retrieve the Quarterstar shards, they will need him to die in order to fulfill the prophecy where they will have ultimate power over the realm, but if Alaezdar survives, the realm will come to a cataclysmic destruction.
