The First Amendment drama wins Los Angeles Press Club's 3rd Annual Veritas Award.
Los Angeles, CA (PRUnderground) January 18th, 2018
The Los Angeles Press Club is thrilled to announce the winner of its 3rd annual Veritas Award for the Best Film Based on or Inspired by Real Events and People. This award is judged by members of the LAPC — based equally upon fidelity of subject matter and artistic excellence.
The overwhelming winner is 20th Century Fox’s The Post written by Liz Hannah and Josh Singer and directed by Steven Spielberg; starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks.
“We are honored and thrilled that the Los Angeles Press Club has voted “The Post” as your prestigious Veritas Award winner. That award title itself “Veritas” represents why truth and freedom of the press are at the heart of our film and your oath as journalists. Thank you all,” said producers Steven Spielberg, Amy Pascal & Kristie Macosko Krieger in a joint comment.
The Post is the story of a cover-up spanning the terms of four U.S. Presidents which challenged the country’s first female newspaper publisher Kay Graham and the hard-driving editor Ben Bradlee to join in an unprecedented battle between journalism and government.
“It’s fitting that our members would choose The Post for the Veritas Award. This film shines a powerful light into our painful history while at the same time forcing us to confront the meaning of American Democracy, the abuse of power and the importance of the Free Press,” said LA Press Club President Robert Kovacik, Anchor/Reporter of NBC4 Southern California.
Dunkirk is this year’s runner up. Past winners were Spotlight and Hidden Figures.
The Veritas Award Ceremony is planned to take place at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills at the end of February. Further details and tickets will be available at LAPressClub.org.
