5 Best Truck Engines of 2020 According to CarBuzz

With many new developments in the pickup truck segment, CarBuzz has spent the last 12 months reviewing and testing dozens of new trucks, and as Senior Editor Jared Rosenholtz notes, with so many upcoming electric models in the pipeline from Bolinger, Ford, GMC, Rivian, and Tesla, “trucks may not be gas-powered forever”. CarBuzz has recently released a list of its top five engines for 2020 across all three size classes, as well as one special mention still to be released in 2021.
Ford PowerBoost
As the industry makes way for electric trucks, Ford now offers the 2021 Ford F-150 with a PowerBoost hybrid drivetrain, which comprises a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 with a 35-kW electric motor for a combined 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque. For now, this is the most torque-rich F-150 ever built, and will remain the most potent derivative until the Raptor arrives. Power delivery is near-instantaneous and it offers superb fuel economy, with EPA figures of 25/26/25 mpg.
GM 6.2-liter V8
The GMC Sierra 1500 Denali has an optional L87 EcoTec3 6.2-liter V8 that makes 420 hp and 460 lb-ft, which earns it the title of the most potent naturally aspirated V8 in the class. It’s mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission, which works incredibly well to make this one of the smoothest trucks in the segment, and offers impressive acceleration additionally.
Ram/Jeep EcoDiesel
The Ram 1500 is offered with an optional 3.0-liter turbocharged EcoDiesel V6, but with only 260 hp on tap. It makes 480 lb-ft of torque, though, which doesn’t translate to breathtaking acceleration, but it does make for excellent fuel economy of 22/32/26 mpg city/highway/combined. This is the same motor found in the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, where the low-range torque proves to be ideal for off-roading.
Ford Power Stroke & Godzilla
Best-in-class outputs of 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft come from the 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel found in the Ford F-250 Super Duty, which allows it to tow up to 37,000 lbs when correctly equipped. The same model also offers a 7.3-liter V8 dubbed Godzilla, with 430 hp and 474 lb-ft, which is equally impressive.
Ram TRX
As an honorable mention, the Ram 1500 TRX’s 6.2-liter supercharged Hellcat V8 has 702 hp available and can sprint to 60 mph in under four seconds. CarBuzz is looking forward to its release in 2021.
