Russian Icon Collection, a project dedicated to the documentation and preservation of Russian icons, has received two reviews of its book, “Russian Icons from the Mid-17th to the Early 20th Centuries: The Collection of Oleg Kushnirskiy,” from the reputable institutions: the State Museum of the History of Religion in Saint Petersburg and the Sergiev Posad Museum-Reserve.

The review from the State Museum of the History of Religion was written by the Head of the Scientific Library, Alla Paneyakh.

The State Museum of the History of Religion is the only institution specializing in the history of global religious and spiritual practices in Russia. Its collection contains over 200,000 religious artifacts, works of fine art, household items, and photographs. The oldest objects in the collection date back to the 6th millennium BC. The Museum also has the Scientific Library, which boasts a collection of historical and contemporary publications dedicated to religion.

In her review, the Head of the Scientific Library, Alla Paneyakh, mentioned the scientific relevance of the material presented in the Russian icon catalog:

“The fact that these icons have never been previously exhibited or reproduced in print is especially notable. Thanks to the publication of the given catalog, both the experts in the field and the general public have received an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the private collection of Oleg Kushnirskiy.”

Alla Paneyakh also noted the outstanding quality of the visual contents of the book.

The Sergiev Posad Museum-Reserve provided another review written by Galina Cherkashina, Head of the Department of Visual Culture of the 14th-17th-century of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius.

The Sergiev Posad Museum-Reserve is well-known for being home to the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, a monastery built in the 14th century. The Museum holds over 110,000 items of cultural and historical significance in its facilities, which makes its Russian art collection the biggest in the country.

Galina Cherkashina, Head of the Department of Visual Culture of the 14th-17th-century of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, provided a detailed and honest review of the Russian icon catalog. She commented on the diversity of the collection in terms of its historical and regional scope, as well as the new international perspective it provides on icon collecting and preservation:

“Considering the fact that the academic articles [presented in the book] were authored by international experts <…>, the topic of works of Russian religious art overseas, almost unexplored by Russian researchers, is of particular interest.”

Russian Icon Collection expresses its gratitude and appreciation to the institutions that took an interest in the Russian icon catalog and provided in-depth and honest reviews of the book.
